Marquette, MI – January 27, 2019 – We certainly “caught the vision” during today’s gathering at Lions Field Ice Rink in Marquette Township for some hockey fun and a chance to support a local family. Originally today’s exhibition game was to be a match up against the Marquette Redmen and Marquette Mutineers, but with a sudden cancellation, the Northern Michigan University Club Hockey Team stepped in to take the Redmen’s place on the ice.
After a fatal car crash claimed the life of two young Iron Range Hockey Players, who were friends to many on the both the Marquette Mutineers and NMU Club Hockey team, the players decided to dedicate today’s game to their fallen friends. The information spread quickly and community members from all over Marquette County came out to enjoy the game and support the Johnson family during this devastating time.
The Mutineers and Wildcats took the ice shortly after 1pm today for an hour long outdoor exhibition hockey game. It was a bone chilling afternoon, but the players had a blast and so did the people spectating the game! The Township had free hot chocolate to help warm everyone up while they watched the meet up game between the Wildcats and Mutineers. Though both teams fought hard, in the end, the results were similar to last year’s game against the NMU Club Hockey Team with the Mutineers taking home another win.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover medical and funeral expenses for the Johnson Family. Other hockey associations from all over Michigan as well as the community have raised up to support this local hockey family, donating over $6,000 toward the fundraising goal already. If you wish to make a donation and were not able to join us at today’s game, visit the official GoFundMe Page for the Johnsons.
Our thoughts go out to the Johnson Family during this difficult time and thank you to everyone who came out today to support the family and our Township!
Missed out on today’s hockey game? Catch the Mutineers at Lakeview Arena on February 8th as they host the Calumet Wolverines. This game will also be dedicated to the Johnson family. One of the family members will be doing an honorary puck drop and following the game there will be a short ceremony to present them all the money that has been raised. Follow the Marquette Mutineers Facebook Page for more information.
