Marquette Township – May 13, 2012– The Charter Township of Marquette first millage contribution to the Iron Ore Heritage Trail was dispersed to the Authority this spring and is being put toward completing the multi-use trail.
Bids should be let June 1 with an expected completion from Negaunee Township to Marquette Township around October 1, 2012. Trailhead #9 will also be established by the Iron Ore Heritage Recreation Authority located at Schwemwood Park on Co. Rd. 492. Funds will also be used to update the Soo Line railroad crossing by the Holiday Inn, so trail users can connect to the city trail and on to Chocolay and eventually farther east.
Along these same lines, the Marquette County Road Commission will be “straightening the curve” at Brookton Road/Co. Rd. 492 beginning around June 1. There will be a stop sign there and the road will “T”, just like at Commerce Drive. The road between that sign and the Commerce intersection will be repaved and the “walking path” continued.
The Marquette Township Board also authorized a private road to be built behind, what is being called, “the Starbucks Mall” to exit somewhere onto Co. Rd. 492. This will help traffic flow during busy times with Michael’s mall customers. Schwemwood Park will also be expanded at some point when the township receives its distribution from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Grant, which was approved 12/31/11.
