New Town Hall Facility for Marquette Township

MARQUETTE, MI – The majority of the Marquette Township Board meeting Tuesday, July 24, was taken up with discussion on the new Town Hall facilities to be constructed on Commerce Dr. in Marquette. The new facility is planned for 4+ acres that the township already owns, across from the Superior Eye Health Center on Venture Dr.
According to Lyn Durant, MTBA Vice Chairman Township Board Trustee, Township Board members do not want to go the taxpayers for a millage. Planning for the project began about 15 years ago but this board has worked on it the last 4 years. The Board expects the new facility will be paid for with the funds the township has available. Durant also said that the township can sell property it already owns to help pay for the new Town Hall.
One of the opportunities the new Town Hall will have is a community center. Durant said, township residents have repeatedly stated in surveys and throughout strategic planning meetings that they would like a community center that they can rent for private events and it is something the township is looking forward to providing for anyone who is interested in using it.

The Township Public Works Department is also looking for a facility to house all of their equipment, vehicles and employees. At present, most equipment is scattered throughout the township in different storage facilities and garages. It has been discussed that the PW department will take over the current Township Fire hall. The Township Board and fire department are considering purchasing the lot diagonal from where the town hall would be, again expecting to pay for the construction with available funds.
